Shanghai Dreaming

This interview happened awhile ago, but I had to post it. Jenny Zhu is one of my favorite people at Chinesepod. I was lucky enough to briefly meet her last year during my visit to Shanghai last year when Joyce got married. She is a fascinating woman and I love all the work she has done with Chinesepod & on her blog, Jennyzhu.com

Yesterday Joyce called me and we got a chance to briefly talk. Just hearing her voice made me miss her so much. Then after watching this interview with Jenny, my longing for Shanghai is increasing.

I had started to give up on the dream of moving back to China recently, but now I'm not so certain. I still can't really afford it as my debt is still great & savings minimal. Hopefully my upcoming trip to Ireland won't set me back too much.

I really want to work for Chinesepod. I've been a loyal listener to the podcast since 2006 (though sadly have never been active that much on the site). Even if I couldn't get a job there, I do want to live in Shanghai. I miss Joyce terribly. I want to live in the same city as her again. To be part of her life more than a few times a year. Gods, I feel so uncertain about how to make these dreams come true.

that anniversary thing

As of Sunday (8/31/08), I have been employed at WebMD for one whole year. However, I still consider my time as a contractor as working for WebMD though AppleOne was technically my employer. So for me, this marks the 2nd year anniversary at this job. Crazy to think that this job started out as a temp gig. Just something to pay the bills till I figured out what was next.

And I'm still figuring that out. I have ideas, vague sketches of something resembling plans, but really I don't know whats next. With Lindsay leaving soon for grad school... I keep having these "what am I doing with my life" moments. I'm biding my time really. Procrastinating in the usual fashion by sticking with a job that more convenient than a career plan. Don't get me wrong, I love working here. It's a great company and I work with some really awesome people. But I don't see myself following a "career" in customer service (or whatever else you could call my job).

Anyways, I'm full of nostalgic thoughts today. So here an interesting little list of where I was X years ago....

  • ....1 year ago I had just started living Lindsay and working as a full time employee for WebMD
  • ....2 years ago I was living in that horrible attic bedroom and had just started my "temp" job downtown
  • ....3 years ago I was starting my senior year trying to figure out what my thesis was going to be about
  • .... 4 years ago I was adjusting to life in 福州 Fuzhou and getting to know 妙妙 Joyce

09 Travel Plans

Today I talked to 妙妙 Joyce online and she told me that she's going to stay in Taiwan to have her baby. Before she had been trying to come to Portland to have her kid, but her Mom convinced her this would be a bad idea. I have to say I'm relieved. I too thought this was a bad idea and felt guilty that I told her I couldn't live with her. So now I'm pondering trying to visit her in Taiwan around the Chinese New Year in Feb.

I'm also planning on visiting Lindsay in Manchester with a stop in London to visit Amanda & Ben and Max & Amy. If this all works out, I'll basically be repeating the vacations I took this year. I hope I get a little more vacation time next year since it will be my second year as a full time employee. Still, I love traveling so much I want to make these trips happen. We'll have to see.

Right now I need to see when I can get a new computer. Joyce told me she now has a Mac book, the one I've been coveting ever since my parents go one last December. My current computer seems to be slowly dying. I'll have to play around with my finances... but maybe I could get one in Sept or Oct. I would love to be able to use the video call feature with my skype account. Talking to Joyce online isn't always easy as her oral english is better than her writing. Plus being able to see her as well as hear her voice would be awesome. I miss her so much. I still cling to the hope that someday I will live in Shanghai and we can see each other almost everyday again.

The Wedding Ceremony

So there was a little confusion about what was going on for Joyce & Patrick's wedding. I thought Joyce had told me she was getting married twice, once in Shanghai & then another ceremony in Taiwan. She invited me to join either ceremony, and since I'm totally in love with Shanghai, I chose to attend that ceremony. Well, what took place wasn't a wedding and I think the closest approximation would be an engagement party. The reason for these two separate ceremonies has do with the restrictions placed on Chinese to visit Taiwan. From what I understand, if your Chinese you cannot easily visit Taiwan unless you have family there. Since Patrick's family are Shanghai-ese, they would not been able to go to Taiwan for the wedding.

There was some sort of the ceremony to the engagement party, but I'm not totally sure what it was all about. Joyce had to sit on this chair while the elder members of her & Patrick's family sat in a row next to her. A man conducting the ceremony brought out this display of a gold jewelry and talked for a while before Patrick came up and started putting some of the jewelry on Joyce. In this photo of Joyce and her mother, you can get a good close-up of some of the jewelry. Both Joyce & Patrick's mother also took turns putting things on Joyce and Joyce even at once point put something on Patrick. I asked Joyce about this and she said it was very traditional to give gold jewerly during wedding ceremonies. The style and size can depend on the region and she mentioned how what they had used was something of a cross between Chinese and Taiwanese traditions (one usually used larger sized jewelry than the other, but I can't remember which one).

After the part with the gold jewelry was done, Joyce & Patrick served tea to the family members who had been sitting in a row to on side (on the left side as seen in the pic below). While the man conducting the ceremony talked for a little while, they all sipped their tea cups then return the tea cup with a red envelope full of money. These red envelopes, 红包 hong bao, are a traditional gifts for Chinese weddings.

When all the tea & hong bao were given to Joyce & Patrick, a few more words were said then we all applauded the new couple. After that, we all sat down and began dinner. Since everything was conducted in Chinese, and I was still jet-lagged and preoccupied with taking photos, I really didn't catch much of what was said. Joyce told me she was going to have a western-style wedding in Taiwan, so I suppose this ceremony I witnessed was more of the traditional Chinese wedding traditions. I wish I had more vacation time and could have gone to Taiwan for the wedding, so that I could see what a Chinese western-style wedding was like. One thing that I have learned from my time in China is that anything that is done "western-style" is still done with a Chinese twist. I noticed this more with food than anything else, but it seems this applies to all cultural traditions that are used in a foreign country.

Shanghai, here I come

Wednesday morning Joyce told me that she was going to get married in late March. She told me that she understood why I probably couldn't come, but wanted to invite me anyways. Well, turn out, I can go her wedding. I had to max out my vacation time, postpone the credit card death date and well, complete rethink my finances for the next few months... but managed to work out my trip.

So yesterday I bought my plane ticket. Eeek!

A Farewell

I hadn't heard from Joyce in a long time and had begun to wonder if something was wrong. In fact part of me knew that something must be wrong. Today I finally got a chance to talk to her online, and found out that my instincts were correct. I don't know the timing of it all, but I do know that her uncle died and then within a month her father.

I only met her father briefly when her family was kind enough to host Evelyn and I for a week in Taiwan. I remember him being very funny and kind, both her parents were. The picture her is of the two of us when we were visiting them. My heart goes out to Joyce and her family. I wish I knew his name, but I don't. All I have are the warm memories of him, so this is my farewell to a man I barely knew.

getting that travel itch

Last night I dreamt I was on the way to the airport to visit Joyce in Shanghai. There was some mix up that cause me to miss my original flight and Dad had to reschedule for me. While at the airport I was going through my luggage pulling out the extra winter coats Mom had packed. That's all I really remember. It was a crazy hectic dream that mostly involved me stressing out about making my flight to Shanghai.

It doesn't take a genius to interpret this dream. I haven't traveled to anywhere outside of Oregon since I got back from China. Hopefully with this new job that will change....

an update

The craziness of the past month seems to be finally dying. Joyce, my dear friend I met while living in Fuzhou, was here for almost four weeks (7/24 to 8/17). It was an amazing and wonderful visit. Evelyn and I tried to take her to our favorite Portland restaurants and other must-see sights. My parents were very kind and hosting a fabulous dinner (my dad cooked a superb meal) and taking Joyce and I to the beach for a mini-camping trip.

Just before Joyce arrived, I agreed to do something I swore I wasn't going to do this summer, move. Lindsay, Andy and I found this wonderful house that I'm still not sure how we got. We just finished interviewing potential housemates last night and soon will have a full house (5 people total). I'm very excited about this new living situation.

Shortly before Joyce left, I found out that there was an opportunity for me to get hired on full time, and I got the job! Starting next Monday I will be a real WebMD employee, and from here on out, AppleOne can kiss my ass! This job means a significant pay raise and full benefits (even stock options!). Still not totally sure how it will change from what I have been doing, but it looks like I'm going to be doing my technical things (like loading various files).

[Update] Real start date isn't till 7/30. Why? fuck if I know...
